The Skeleton Continued...

Continuing our skeleton unit, Morah brought in xrays for the children to see and guess the bones they were looking at. They were encouraged to use the names of the bones they learned as well as spoke about what organs they protect. Then Morah told a story of her friend "John" who had an accident and fell apart. The children needed to work as a team and put "John" back together again.

Dreidel Making!

Dear Parents,

Chanukah learning  is in full swing!
We are busy learning all about what we will do on Chanukah and why we do them.

Today we learned about the four letters on the Dreidel "Nun, Gimmel, Hey, Shin"- Which stands for 
"A big miracle happened there."
Each child got to make their very own Menorah using Modeling Clay and engrave the four letters on the Dreidel!
The children are very excited to take the Menorahs and Dreidels home to use on Chanukah!

Menorah Making!

Dear Parents,

Today in Kitah Alef the children started to make their very own Menorah to use on Chanukah!

The children glued down the 8 Ceramic Jugs to be used for the candles and one taller candle in the middle to be used as the “Shamash”-The candle used to light the other candles.

The children can’t wait to paint them and use them at home!!!

Our Skeleton!

Today in First Grade we learned about the Skeleton! 

The children learned:

• to describe what the inner and outer parts of the bone looks like
• 3 jobs the skeleton does - protect organs, give shape to the body and that the long bones make blood cell
• a skeleton has 206 bones
• the spine has 26 bones that protect the spinal cord
• to locate where their spine is
• how the spine moves
• to identify the largest bone in their body as well and the smallest
• bones meet at places called joints

Morah brought in diagrams for the children to see as we went along. To review, we played a game show review game and labeled a diagram of a skeleton. The children also made their own spinal cords! Morah handed out pipe cleaners to act as the spinal cord. Then each child was given cut up pieces of straw to act as the bones that protect the spinal cord. The children placed the cut straws on the pipe cleaner and bent them in all directions. This demonstrates the idea of small bones protecting the spinal cord and allowing us to bend at the same time.
