Counting Money in First Grade

In our first grade math class we covered a unit on counting money. We started out learning about each coin, what its name is, and its value. Before each activity I modeled for the class how we count various denominations of money, and how we can exchange those amounts using other coins. We also sat together on the rug and had a chance to explore the money together, count the change, and practice showing money using coins. This gave the kids a real hands on experience. To further their hands on learning, for each lesson the kids split up into partners, and were given index cards with different amounts on change written on it, change to practice with. The kids worked together to figure out which coins to use and exchange coins to get the same amount.
