Force and Motion

Kindergarten started a new unit in science, Force and Motion!
Points they learned:
  • Force is a push or pull
  • A push moves something away from you
  • A pull moves something towards you
  • When an object moves, it is in motion
  • How an object is in motion depends on how big/heavy the object is as well as the amount of force
  • Using simple things can help move things easier like a ramp or lever
Morah tied a rope to a toy car and placed on bottom of ramp. We gave once short quick pull first with a little force then with a lot and discussed our observations.
Next we made a ramp and rolled a ball with as little force as possible and also another time with strong force and discussed our observations.
The children also noticed to throw a ball and get it to certain people (depending on if they were sitting further or closer) they had to use more or less force.

First grade pointed out that outside the building there is a ramp. We took our car and ball and decided to try our experiments on it as well.

Latkes and Doughnut Recipes!!!

Dear Parents,

I hope you are having a nice and enjoyable Chanukah with your families.

The children learned in school about the miracles of Chanukah that happened many years ago to the Jewish People. One of the miracles that happened to the Jewish people was when they wanted to light the Menorah after they won the war with the Greeks, they couldnt find a sealed jug of oil to light the Menorah since the Greeks destroyed Everything in the Beis Hamikdash.  Hashem made a miracle and the Jews found one Jug of sealed oil to light the Menorah
This Jug of oil was enough to last for one day but Hashem made another miracle and the oil lasted 8 days, till the Jews came back with new oil.

Therefore on Chanukah we eat  foods made with oil  such as Latkes and Sufganiyot to remember the miracles that happened with the oil to the Jewish people!

I posted  links of  recipes for Latkes and Doughnuts to make at home with your children.

Enjoy!

Handwriting Without Tears

The children were so excited to get back into their Handwriting Without Tears program! Morah came in and the children were singing the songs they learned last year as well as forming letters with their fingers and with their friends.
We are learning the proper formation of lowercase letters. We will be using hands on ways to learn as well as the Handwriting Without Tears Workbook.

The Globe

First Grade reviewed and learned:

  • The seven continents
  • 50 states
  • The difference between a map and a globe
  • The Four Oceans
  • North, South, East and West

  • How to locate a capital on a map

The Skeleton Continued...

Continuing our skeleton unit, Morah brought in xrays for the children to see and guess the bones they were looking at. They were encouraged to use the names of the bones they learned as well as spoke about what organs they protect. Then Morah told a story of her friend "John" who had an accident and fell apart. The children needed to work as a team and put "John" back together again.

Dreidel Making!

Dear Parents,

Chanukah learning  is in full swing!
We are busy learning all about what we will do on Chanukah and why we do them.

Today we learned about the four letters on the Dreidel "Nun, Gimmel, Hey, Shin"- Which stands for
"A big miracle happened there."
Each child got to make their very own Menorah using Modeling Clay and engrave the four letters on the Dreidel!
The children are very excited to take the Menorahs and Dreidels home to use on Chanukah!
