Transportation, Bridges and Tunnels

As we continue Our City unit, we have been learning about community helpers, various modes of transportation such as subways, ferries, planes, etc. Below is a picture of Morah showing us a subway map and how it works. We also learned about bridges and tunnels and how they are built.

Sorting Animal Features

First Grade continues to move forward in their science units. We are now learning all about animals, their needs to survive, their habitats and so much more! We spoke about the different features animals have and how we can sort them. Morah spoke about sorting and various ways we can sort things, by shape, color, size, etc. We took our geometric shapes container and demonstrated what we learned about sorting, then we applies our knowledge to our current science lesson. The class was divided three groups of four. Each table received 4 sorting rings, 4 index cards, a pack of animal pictures and pencils.

First- Open their sorting rings
Second- Write fur, feathers, scales and smooth skin on each index card
Third- Each group had to discuss the pictures of the animals and sort them in the correct ring
Last- We discussed our findings

This experiment really had the children communicating with each other in order to have the whole process run smoothly. I was so proud of how well they did!

Pesach:))

Dear Parents,

We have been very busy in the First Grade learning all about the upcoming holiday of Pesach.
We learned the story of the Jews leaving Egypt with lots of songs that the children love to sing and act out the story!
We learned that the Jews left Egypt in a big hurry and had no time for the dough to rise and instaed of bread baked into Matzah.

This past Wednesday the children went on a trip to the Model Matzah Bakery. They had a great time  watching  the process of  how we make Matzah. They experienced  from the very beginning of making the Flour from wheat to rolling out their own Matzah which they got to eat for lunch.

In addition the children are working very hard on their Pesach Haggadah to use at the Pesach Seder.
They can’t wait to take it home and use on PesachJ

First Grade Reads to Kindergarten

One of the special things we did for Literacy Fun Day was to read to Kindergarten. Our first grade class had been working on writing their own individual books, on a topic of their choice. They had to write across pages, and include illustrations. Luckily they were finished in time for Literacy Fun Day, and we went to Kindergarten to share. It was a lot of fun, and the kids had a real sense of accomplishment.
