What better way to celebrate Literacy Month than to read some of the books we bought at the Book Fair. It was so much fun to sit on the floor and read aloud some of the books the kids bought... :))))

First Grade Goes to the Book Fair ...
Recently we went to the Annual Mazel Book Fair. It was really so much fun to take the kids. They made such mature choices while picking books. They took their time while browsing the books, and helped each other when they could not decide. The first grade also listened to the advice of their teachers while making choices. I am extremely proud of them.

Living and Non Living Things
How are Living Things and Non-Living things Different?
· Living things are alive. They can grow and change.
· Living things have basic needs in order to remain alive. These include air, water, food and a space to live or grow.
· Non-living things don’t need air, water or food. They don’t grow. But they might change over time.
First grade first took seeds and placed them on a wet paper towel on a plate, in a bag so we can see the progression of it's growth.
Next the children had the opportunity to plant their own seeds in soil, making sure not to overcrowd the seeds in the cup. We made sure to give it soil, water, space and light.
Last we took another cup and put seeds with no water and placed it in the closet so it would not get light. We are comparing our plants with the proper needs to one without the proper needs to survive.
We even learned a song to go with the lesson!

Happy Birthday Ariella!
First Grade celebrated Ariella's 7th Birthday! The children made birthday cards for her, wished her special birthday wishes and danced around Ariella in a circle. On each happy occasion, we need to remember how important it is to do mitzvahs. Ariella gave her friends a bracha, collected tzedakah and everyone said pasukim from the Torah. Finally it was time to eat yummy cupcakes! Thank you to Ariella's family for joining us and for the special puzzle and books for the class. We can't wait to use them!
Investigating Property Changes
We learned that when Scientist do experiments, they do them over and over to get their conclusions. During the experiments, scientists will change something in their experiment such as the amount of water being used, the temperature of something, etc. First grade did an investigation putting different solids into water ie salt and sand.. We predicted what would happen to each solid when mixed in water. Then we wrote our conclusions when doing the actual experiment.
As a side experiment, we filled a cup up with water, stating it was a liquid. We took the cup and placed it in the freezer, the cold air making it ice, a solid over night. Then leaving it out on the counter turned it back into a liquid. We left the cup of water on the counter and are watching for it to turn into a gas. Each day we observe if the water has gone down at all.

Friday - 9:20-10:15
However, we will be flexible with your schedule, just let us know when's good for you. There is a calendar hanging outside our classroom for you to sign up. Please write your name and the time you would like to come in. One parents per day please. You can come in the same weeks the book fair is going on as well. If you email me a time you would like to come in, I can write it in for you.
Once you've got a date scheduled, you will need to select the book that you would like to read to the class. Here are some guidelines to consider:
a) It should be a book that your child enjoys reading at home.
b) Please keep in mind the length of the books we read in class are not too long to accommodate the attention of the children when being read to in a group. If you would like, let me know the book you would like to read and I can help you decide if it's too long or just right.
Looking forward to seeing you...
Sincerely,
Morah Gaby
