Tu Bishvat!

In First Grad today we celebrated Tu Bishvat-the Birthday of the trees!

We started off our day with making our very own fruit salad with all different fruits the children brought  into school.
In addition each child decorated their own Tu Bishvat tree using their creativity and labeling the parts of tree in Hebrew!
We than all gathered together for a special Tu Bishvat Festival! At the  festival, everyone had a chance to taste from all the Shivas Haminim-Seven Fruits that grow in Israel, sing songs and most excitingly, have a piece of the Chocolate Tree Cake!!!!

(You can ask your children to sing to you their favorite Tu Bishvat song!)

Our First Publishing Party ..

In First Grade we have been working a lot on writing. I am very proud to say that our first graders have published their very first piece of writing. The first step was to  discuss things we are interested in, as well as things we love, and like to do. I modeled for the class how to turn those discussions  into a list and from there the writing process began. The kids learned how to write across pages, with lots of detail and content. Once they finished writing their first draft, I taught them what it means to edit and revise. This is part of the writing process, before a piece can be published. Once each child was confident they were happy with their piece, they made a cover page. Next we had a grand celebration where the kids enjoyed snacks, and read what they wrote in the Author's Chair.

We made Butter!

First grade has been learning all about Pilgrim children and their chores. Part of their chore were tying the bundles of wheat, cleaning the animal pens, churning butter, serving meals, collecting eggs from the chickens, etc. We compared our lives today to those of the Pilgrim children. We all agreed things are a lot easier today!
To get a feel of putting in hard work in order to get our food, the children made butter! We poured heavy cream into a container and everyone had to shake it for a while. When it was ready, we spread it on crackers and enjoyed a tasty treat! After, the children went back to their desks and made pictures of a chore the Pilgrims did and wrote a sentence about it.
